Baldhead Island and Hurricane Fran: In Memory of Trees,
Photographs by Charles Dennis (1952-2005)
Exhibition on view December 1, 2008 – January 30, 2009
Dear Center Friends:
We are pleased to announce a new exhibition of photographs at the Love House and Hutchins Forum, 410 East Franklin Street, beginning on Monday, December 1. The exhibition, organized by Ann Stewart Fine Art, features the work of Charles Dennis, with images selected from his Baldhead Island portfolio and from his Hurricane Fran, 1996 series. A reception in honor of the artist and his wife, Susan Dennis, who has carried on his artistic legacy, will be held at the Center on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. In addition, public gallery hours are Thursdays from 2:00-4:30.
The Baldhead Island photographs, produced over a period of 10 years (prior to much of the development on the island), capture iconic marsh and island landscapes that were a source of joy and inspiration to the artist, as he battled a 30 year affliction with rheumatoid arthritis. The Hurricane Fran images, In Memory of Trees, depict the aftermath of the storm in this area.
Photographs in this exhibition were featured in an article on Charles Dennis in the April 2008 issue of Black and White magazine. His photographs continue to win awards in many prestigious, juried competitions, including this year’s Prix de la Photographie (PX3) and the 2008 International Photography Awards.
