Dear Friend,

The night before Charlie passed away, I watched him sleep. I was exhausted from a day of care giving and wondered if the time had come to request hospice care. Charlie lived most of his life with illness and survived years beyond any medical expectations. I felt that, together, we could pull him through his latest downturn, even though homecare doctors felt he was near the end. He was awake, alert, busy, witty and vital…and yet he was dying. I fought like a warrior for nearly 25 years to help keep him alive and there I was, unknowingly watching him sleep his last night.

Reflecting back is still difficult for me. What I know now, I share with anyone who is in the place I was in five years ago. “Hospice” to me means this: you are not alone. It means that you need not fear the end for a loved one nor feel that you, alone, must “save” them or spare their suffering.

When this last day or night approaches for one we cherish, the good work of hospice care allows us to be frail and vulnerable and human—to turn to a trained friend for help and to embark on our own journey of loss all the while knowing that we are not alone and that our loved one is in a place of comfort, care and compassion, three words that could never mean more than at this time. To me, there is neither act nor gift from another greater than this. It is one hand holding another’s in an endless and universal human chain of passage back to our creator.

For this reason, I ask that we give to hospice care. I celebrate Charlie’s life and life’s work by offering these selected images and limited series prints to help contribute to all they do.

Prints may be ordered by contacting me at susan@scprints.com. Each print is made by a master printmaker, one at a time to perfectly match Charlie’s original. It is then signed and numbered by me. I hope you will consider the purchase of one or more of these prints as a contribution to honor this cause.
